Soldiers at war ssi patch

This and Commandos took up way too much of my time. Referring to alhombre's message earlier, my original game works in Windows 10 quite nicely. Based on a short session the only problem is operating the map with a mouse. A slight nudge sends the view to the extreme corner of the map, but directional buttons work well. I don't think it was well known but with the popular resurgence of xcom type games this should get a look. It was an excellentturn based tactical squad level game.

I am surprised that nothing like it has been made since. I will add my vote for this, I still have the original cd and case :. I wish I still had my disk. SaW is a turn based game reference! Still waiting for it to be available on GOG.

I would love to see this game in here. So huge part of my childhood! A very good turn based WW2 squad game. If you enjoy this game, I suggest you also check out Squad Leader, using the same engine, by the same developers. Those wishes are duplicates of this one: Add another.

A special note about the Thompson submachine gun: this is a great weapon, in spite of its description— you would guess that it is an inaccurate and not very useful.

Not at all! Yes, its damage is light, but it has one of the quickest rates of fire of all the guns, which more than compensates for its statistical inaccuracy… but, using statistics, you can say that quantity makes up for quality! No reloading equals no wasted action points! Another plus: just about any idiot can use this gun effectively, since any given soldier is not really aiming, but just scattering many shells within a general area— skill is an more of an option.

At the beginning of the scenario set up behind the stone wall and take on all reinforcements. Then skirt the town on the west side opposite of the aqueduct. Get the BAR A2 rifle in the narrow building which looks like a stable. First, rescue the hostages in the building to which you are adjacent.

Next, you have to advance across the large open area to the cathedral. You can use the park— be careful because it has mines and German armor in it.

Use the rocks in the park as cover when you advance. Secure the armor with concussion grenades or your bazooka, or, better yet, wait and use your mortar and artillery support!

Be careful of snipers— they are in the cathedral tower and on top of some of the buildings toward the rear of the map.

There is also a nest of Italian soldiers behind the row of buildings at the top of the map. Use smoke when moving across the open terrain. Once there, use the large building in the center of the map as cover to advance to the middle of the map. Place the satchel charges on the bridge and detonate them after seeing the hint message. You only need one lb. Before bringing your guys into combat, take one of the soldiers and walk the entire camp, noting the position of the enemies. Use the other to secure the tank, and then hop in.

Use the tunnel under the latrine to get out or to get in if you are feeling brave! Lo Platoon HQ This one is a lot of fun. Plant your guys in the trenches as soon as possible. Place soldiers into the American tanks if you can manage it and use them to brunt the enemy assaults. Each turn you should pop up the guys in the trench, take a shot and then hit the dirt. Make sure you take out the Germans who are carrying bazookas quickly.

Shoot, duck, throw grenades and survive for 12 turns. An equally effective strategy is to go on the offensive!! Sneak some soldiers into the bombed-out buildings— the smoke makes excellent cover and your surprise attacks will knock out waves of reinforcements with little risk and a shocking efficiency. Use smoke while crossing open terrain and move through buildings when you have the option.

Starting off you move the squad up towards the Northeast corner, leapfrogging as you go: the corner building is your target. NOTE: As you open every door expect enemy units. Use the door on the Eastern side, proceed with caution going down into the basement. This is where you will find the prisoner. You can have him crawl, run, walk, kneel, throw grenades, kick in doors, fire a bazooka, climb into tanks, and whoop some butt in hand-to-hand combat or knife fighting.

The terrain in the game is amazing because SSI has used what is called a "layering" effect for the game map. Each map has seven layers to it, peeling off a layer will reveal what is under a building for instance. Layering is also used when steep mountains are part of the terrain, so you can have as much of the graphics on the screen as you want.

You have lush trees, beautiful brick farm houses, rolling sand dunes, snowy covered peaks, rushing streams, and killer sand bag emplacements. The graphics are a little hard to figure out at first, but once you learn how to change layers and levels, you will really get into the game. I found the individual soldiers to be the best part of the graphics in the entire game. You can actually see that your medic has a Red Cross band on his arm.

All the soldiers' movements are very fluid: when they crawl, you see their elbows and knees bend, when they throw grenades, you see their arms cock back. This attention to detail makes the killing fun and the pillaging even better. Men are screaming, the machine gun is roaring, shells are exploding all around.

God, I love the sound of death in the morning. The audio really adds to the game. At the beginning of each mission, Captain Spencer gives you a little pep talk and shows you what the mission objectives are on the game map. The weapon sounds are what make it so fun. The machine guns really roar and the bazooka makes a big whoosh sound. I found the sound of a flame-thrower to be quite soothing to the ears.

It makes you really paranoid to stick your head over the wall to see if you killed them all. Windows 95, DirectX 5. One thing I noticed right away with this and other SSI games is that the in-game tutorial is becoming the best way to really get into and understand a new PC game. The instruction book, however, does have all the standard information on installing the game, running DirectX, and how to play online.

This means that you can easily spend months playing this great game before you get bored. You can play the game from the perspective of the Americans, Germans and even Italians. The user interface is easy to get and the game's AI is fantastically written and definitely gives a good challenge. The game is very interesting, addictive and fun to play. I can't say that it's one of the best, but it's pretty damn close!

The graphics of the game are of a very good quality, which makes the gaming experience even better.
